are there ongoing research studies for what our population needs? I've been having a really hard living independently and feel like there is not enough help because I fall through the cracks, income too high for Medicaid, and I'm not 65 yet, but there are no alternatives? It's complicated to type it all out, but it's that just it, it's complicated! Doctors don't understand, there's not connection or clarity between what is "normal" age related decline vs other issues, so not getting help there either? It's just a vicious circle and there's no where to go for help! :(

This is one of the best podcasts I have listened to regarding diagnosis and how it can positively impact older newly diagnosed in our communities. Dr. Bal does a wonderful job outlining pros and cons of sharing one's diagnosis with others and how sharing might help immediate family as well as and the greater community. I can see how it might assist "orphan elders" of the baby boomer generation (and other generations going forward) find ways to connect with their "tribes" for more fulfillment and support to each others in the future and strengthen mental health outcomes for our elderly neuro-divergent in our communities. Together we are stronger. Knowing our history helps us shine a light to our future.

Howdy! I have a very serious case! I have a friend who is disabled, severely autistic with a personal assistant who suffers from bullying, for 15 years. Because of 5 brothers who are related to him (an uncle, abusive mother, and 3 aunts). One is 46 years old, the uncle is 45 years old, the second is 44 years old, his abusive mother is 43 years old, and the last one is 37 years old. And a drunken leader who is also always bullying him. They don't have the education that he has. He finished high school, passed his baccalaureate, and is now at college in Year 2 Management. And they still have the guts to bully him? What senseless people! His grandmother loves him very much and he loves her too. But they always have to yell at him. They know that he is different from them, that he is weak and has no way to defend himself. They always call the police to assault him, to laugh at him. It's not right what they're doing to him. They bully him on purpose to make him afraid of them. They always terrorize him, won't leave him alone, while he ignores them and he stays away from them. I am outraged by what is happening to him. He wants to fight back in the sense that he wants to sue the 5 agressive relatives or a friend of him(to sue them) who works with the Ministry of Education at the County School Inspectorate for what they are doing to him. He's going to send them proof of what they're doing to him. Recordings, filming. He no longer wants to be related to them because of the humiliations he endured all these years. He is 21 years old. They also have accomplices who do the same thing to him. He Really Needs Help. And he really believes and LOVES the Creator, God. They are possessed by the Devil. You really should believe me! He has suffered enough, he wants peace and a good life. He ignores them because he is scared of them, he is aware of what they are doing to him. He can't at all! He always hides when they come. I will try to help all disabled people to have a good life. He's going to leave them after college with his grandmother, for a better place. They tell him nonsense to lure him to their dark side. He was beaten by his mother's boyfriends. She didn't raise him. His grandmother raised him. She also torments his little sister who is not autistic. I'm going to help him and his grandmother, and the other families and the female dog, get out of pain and have a good life. His 6 Kindred are doomed and dangerous. Just write to me. They are allowed to mock a severed autistic person with personal assistent? To bully him that he's different, huh? I'd say, NO! They're not allowed. They don't care about him, they're using him for their dark goals. They're manipulating the other people to believe in them. I was crying when i saw his sad real story. He's been suffering enough. They're saying this to him ,,You are too big, to asist you in the shop, to buy, or to walk with you in the park". They're leaving him all alone in the park for the other people to bully him, instead these relatives on taking his side. This second husband of his mother, he humiliated him last year at the mountain in front of godparents of the husband. Instead on helping the kid to clean up, he shouted at him very hard, and he cried. Don't take their side, because he's suffered enough! They're equal to us, we don't have rights to mock them! I'm gonna fight morally for their benefits and good will.

The reduced longevity figure quoted here of up to two decades shorter is way out. The 2024 Lancet research report showed a reduced longevity rates was 6.5 years. For females was 8 years less. They also stated that these figures were possibly less {only 2-3 years less} if the data looked at larger numbers of diagnosed older people you get a pretty minimal longevity differences between them and non Autistic elders. Far too many older Autistic have missed a formal diagnosis. Quality of life for Autistic people is below what they should be. Services for older Autistics are very poor.

My seizures have been less frequent in these last five years, having four or five seizures per year, compared to having four or five per month--leading to my temporal lobe lobectomy in 2001.

I'm on the Autism spectrum, and hit puberty at about 8 or 9 years old, and started getting my period when I was 10. It might (not saying it is) also be a good idea to mention these changes to the younger siblings or children in your home. I know what you're probably thinking. "How do I explain to a child who is still at the age of princess dolls, superhero action figures, and two plus two (2+2), about more mature things, like their older sibling's changing body and hormonal moodiness?" Well, thankfully, you don't have to be too scientific about the explanation, but here's an example of how you can explain it. "Your older sibling's body and brain are going through a lot of big changes, and even though they might be feeling excited about all of the big changes, they might be feeling angry, sad, scared, or even embarrassed about them sometimes too. So even though your sibling still loves you just as much as they always have, they might not always be as patient with you as they've been in the past, because of all of the big changes, and the way they are making them feel."

24:59-- many people who are neurodivergent will experience some form of disordered eating and be labeled a "picky eater" as a child. However, as someone who has been through eating disorder treatment as adult and minor, it's very important to also explore the barriers to food and eating. I'm glad you mentioned these barriers such as gastroparesis, the very real physical barrier that comes with disordered eating and stomach problems as a result of that, but I think it's also important to remember that sensory issues and food aversions and executive dysfunction can all be neurodivergent barriers to food and eating.

Lets be fair lol its reasonable to want to throw yourself out of a moving vehicle if everyone in it is singing christmas songs endlessly 🤞🏻 important to teach autistic people how to have boundaries around sensory sensitivity instead of just shaping them to suit their families wants, we arent dogs ☹. Any neurotypical person would be upset or act out as well if they knew they had no & will never have autonomy choice or options around things that physically distress them 🤷‍♀️. Its great to have tools to tolerate distress but at what point do we get to choose to have an environment & routine that is not distressing if we rely on caregivers lol

I am 63, I was diagnosed with severe autism at age 60. The best thing anyone can do for one with autism is to respect their special needs such as informing others that noise, bright lights, wireless frequencies, noise from engines & lawn equipment cause autistic people to suffer from severe sensory pain, overwhelming stress, pain, PTSD & insomnia. There needs to be more protection from the ADA & legal representation to protect autistic people from abusive home owner associations & law enforcement. The quality of my life is extremely low & very depressing because of inconsiderate, loud obnoxious people & pathetic cell phone addicts. Depression from below poverty SSI income that forces us to live in impoverish environments which negatively affects our health. Autistic people have different disability barriers which are not clearly documented in the ADA Act. Most autistic people are so bullied all of their life that they isolate themselves which leads to an early death. Autism is a cognitive disability, not an intellectual or mental disability. Medicaid is worthless, I cannot find a doctor that accepts medicaid, autistic people should be on medicare. There are no "sensory friendly" medical offices which an autistic person avoids, all businesses need to be sensory friendly to be ADA compliant. Autistic adults rarely exercise because of loud surroundings that create exhausting stress & depression. These are things to help you see what can be done to help autistic adults. I personally need protection from housing discrimination & harassment, HUD does not protect disabled people, so where do I find protection?
